Community Matters

A message from United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.

Funding to advance the common good

I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with dozens of United Way volunteers during the past 18 months as we evaluated Nashville’s most pressing health and human service needs and searched for the best programs to proactively tackle a wide range of challenges.

Four strategy teams, with approximately 20 volunteers each, met numerous times to study their specific area: children, basic needs, wellness or neighborhoods.  Each team included experts and leaders from nonprofit agencies, government, corporations and local educational institutions.  While United Way will always allocate a portion of funding to programs dealing with existing problems, the volunteer-driven teams determined that we also need to look for opportunities to support programs focused on prevention, and not just intervention.

The result? Funding for quality after-school programs and mentoring programs designed specifically for at-risk middle school students, support for preventative health care programs for low-income families, and financial literacy programs  geared to getting folks on the right path just to name a few!

After the strategy teams completed their work, another set of 117 trained volunteers evaluated 174 requests for funding.  That ultimately led to board approval of funding for 138 programs at 65 agencies set to receive funding during the 2008-2011 investment cycle.  Take a look at the programs and agencies (Click here).  You’ll see an explanation of each program and the allocated funding.

You can get involved, too.

We are fortunate to live in a city where your volunteer work is recognized as one of the key elements defining your reputation in the community. In fact, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville is working to offer volunteer opportunities throughout the year. If you are interested, please click here. Additionally, any of the agencies included on the funded list would welcome your help on specific programs.  If you see one that interests you give the agency a call – get involved, and Live United!
